Much has been written in books about the well-known Appalachian Railroads such as the B&O, C&O, Clinchfield, L&N, N&W, Pennsylvania, Southern, and Virginian. Individually they are well documented. But collectively, their exemplary design, leadership, financial success, and being a key driver of the region’s economy are not always truly appreciated, especially online.

A Johnson City, TN native, I’m Sandhi (Sandy) Kozsuch the Editor of Appalachian-Railroads.org. Don’t let the spelling of my name throw you, I spent my early years in the beautiful Blue Ridge mountain region, and still sport remnants of a southern accent. Other career and train stops throughout my life include Richmond, Charlotte, New York City, and now the Atlanta area…..all excellent railroad destinations.

After a 50-year career in television and the internet, it was time to enjoy my life-long interests and hobbies as a second career. In my youth, I spent countless hours watching the Clinchfield, the ET&WNC, and the Southern Railway trains parading through my hometown. Now, I can build upon and share those great memories and railroads through this website and its two partner websites: Clinchfield.org and Southern-Railroads.org.

Website Goals

My goals for this endeavor are simple:

Create new Appalachian Railroad railfans
Preserve and further explore the stories and the history
Share the new information we find, and link you to the information that exists
Create online guides for the railroads as they exist today
Honor and highlight the individuals and organizations who have these same goals, and those who have already given so much of their time in decades past.

The content of this website will eventually be donated to the archives of the region and the railroad historical associations. This website is a non-commercial blog, but we continue to build it into a historical resource noteworthy for archives in the future. In 2026, we now have well over 200 pages of content, with more pages and topics being added monthly. Much of the new content is based on archival documents through our research. Appalachian-Railroads.org is non-commercial and is meant to be used for educational and entertainment purposes. Even though we work to have multiple sources for each topic and each page on this site, we cannot guarantee total accuracy.
