Historical Timeline of CSX (Transportation) Railroad
It could be said that idea for CSX Transportation began in the early 1900s when the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad obtained majority stock in the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, and leased the Clinchfield Railroad. Today, those lines make up a large amount of the current day CSX. Later in the 1900s, the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway gained control of the Baltimore & Ohio.
The first part of the this timeline lists all of the corporate acquisitioins, restructuring, and merging that took place before the 1980s, setting in motion what would become CSX. Then, from the 1980s onward, we will follow the evolution of CSX as a singular company.
Chessie System Railroads
- Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O): Controlled B&O from 1962 and Western Maryland from 1967.
- Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O): Oldest U.S. railroad, absorbed into C&O in 1987.
- Western Maryland Railway (WM): Merged into Chessie System in 1983.
- Pere Marquette Railway: Acquired by C&O in 1947.
Seaboard Coast Line Industries Railroads
- Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (ACL): Merged with SAL to form SCL in 1967.
- Seaboard Air Line Railroad (SAL): Merged with ACL to form SCL in 1967.
- Louisville and Nashville Railroad (L&N): Part of the Family Lines System in the 1970s.
- Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway (NC&StL): Acquired by L&N in 1957.
- Monon Railroad: Acquired by L&N in 1971.
- Clinchfield Railroad (CC&O): Merged into the Seaboard System in 1983.
- Georgia Railroad and Banking Company: Part of the Georgia Group merged into the Seaboard System in 1983.
- Atlanta and West Point Railroad (AWP): Merged into the Seaboard System in 1986.
- Western Railway of Alabama (WRA): Merged into CSX Transportation in 2002.
Other Predecessors
- Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad (RF&P): Important bridge line, formally merged in 1991.
1970s: The path to merger
- 1971: Passenger services of Chessie System and Seaboard Coast Line Industries (SCLI) predecessors transferred to Amtrak.
- 1972: Family Lines System created as a marketing name for SCLI railroads.
- 1973: Chessie System created, bringing together C&O, B&O, and WM.
- 1976: Conrail formed by the U.S. government from bankrupt Northeast railroads.
- 1978: CSX Corporation organized to facilitate the merger of Chessie System and SCL Industries.
- 1979: Formal application for the Chessie/SCLI merger filed with the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC).
- 1980: ICC approves the merger in September.
1980s: Formation and consolidation
- 1980: CSX Corporation officially formed on November 1.
- Leaders: Prime Osborn III (Chairman), Hays T. Watkins Jr. (President).
- 1982: Hays Watkins takes over as Chairman after Osborn’s retirement.
- 1983: Seaboard Coast Line, Louisville and Nashville, and others officially merged into Seaboard System Railroad.
- 1986: Seaboard System changes its name to CSX Transportation.
- 1987:
- B&O merged into C&O.
- C&O merged into CSX Transportation, completing the consolidation of major railroad operations.
- 1988: Hays Watkins retires; CSX enters a period of management transition.
- 1989: John W. Snow appointed President and CEO.
1990s: Expansion and the Conrail acquisition
- 1991: Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad formally merged into CSX.
- Mid-1990s: Acquired portions of the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad.
- 1997: CSX and Norfolk Southern (NS) agree to a joint acquisition of Conrail.
- 1998: Surface Transportation Board (STB) approves the Conrail breakup plan; CSX gets 42% of Conrail’s assets, NS gets 58%.
- 1999:
- CSX begins operating on its portion of the former Conrail network.
- Conrail continues to exist as a jointly owned terminal and switching company (Conrail Shared Assets) in northern New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Detroit.
- Acquisition significantly expands CSX’s network into key northeastern markets.
2000s: Shifting priorities and headquarters move
- Early 2000s: CSX absorbs its intermodal subsidiary, CSL Intermodal, and renames it CSX Intermodal.
- 2002: The Western Railway of Alabama is formally merged.
- 2003: CSX moves its corporate headquarters from Richmond, VA, to Jacksonville, FL.
- 2003: Michael J. Ward becomes chairman and CEO.
- Mid-2000s: Financial performance improves due to focus on cost reduction and operational efficiency.
- 2008: CSX launches new slogan, “How Tomorrow Moves”.
2010s: PSR and restructuring
- 2014: CSX declines Canadian Pacific Railway’s offer for a merger.
- 2015: Oscar Munoz appointed president and CEO.
- 2017:
- E. Hunter Harrison appointed CEO, initiates Precision Scheduled Railroading (PSR).
- Focuses on cost reduction, efficiency, and service improvements.
- Harrison passes away in December; James M. Foote becomes president and CEO.
- 2018:
- Foote continues Harrison’s PSR implementation.
- Thousands of jobs cut; locomotives and rail cars stored.
2020s: Acquisitions and infrastructure investment
- 2022:
- Acquires Pan Am Railways for $601 million, expanding into northern New England.
- Acquisition provides new connections in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine.
- Joseph R. Hinrichs appointed president and CEO.
- 2023:
- Major upgrades to former Pan Am trackage and facilities, including Rigby and Ayer yards.
- Installs new automated train inspection portals.
- 2024:
- CSX undertakes infrastructure enhancements at Cumberland, MD, yard to boost efficiency.
- Completes the acquisition of the Meridian and Bigbee Railroad (M&B) line.
- Hurricane Helene causes hundreds of millions of dollars in damage to CSX’s Blue Ridge Subdivision.
- Joe Hinrichs named Railway Age “Railroader of the Year”.
- 2025:
- Announces significant investment in infrastructure projects, including Blue Ridge Subdivision repairs and the Howard Street Tunnel rebuild.
- CSX and BNSF announce transcontinental intermodal partnership
- CSX explores strategic options to enhance shareholder value. Rumors of merger with BNSF or CPKC denied by CSX and BNSF executives.
