Knoxville, Tennessee
The first railroads to arrive in Knoxville were the East Tennessee & Virginia (Bristol to Knoxville, 1856) and the East Tennessee & Georgia (Dalton GA to Knoxville, 1855) Railroads. Both of these lines eventually became part of the Southern Railway.
The Louisville & Nashville was built through Knoxville in the early 1900s, a line which ran from Cincinnati OH to Atlanta GA.
With these railroads and the river, Knoxville became a major transportation hub and commercial center for East Tennessee.
Knoxville Railroads Today
The lines of the Southern Railway are now the Norfolk Southern. The L&N was absorbed by CSX.
The Knoxville and Holston River Railroad is a 20-mile short-line that operates switching operations for multiple Knoxville industries. Rail cars are then delivered to the NS and CSX for long distance transfer.
